Cordgrass Planting Along Shorelines of the GIWW at McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge

Project Description

CEPRA funding was provided to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) for planting of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) to stabilize four miles of selected segments of eroding GIWW shoreline through the McFaddin National  Wildlife Refuge.  This erosion control technique has been successfully employed by the USFWS in other stretches of the GIWW were wave energy is not as strong.  The project protects and restores wetland marshes of the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge from vessel wake impacts caused by navigation traffic along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
