Laguna Vista Spoil Island Shoreline Protection Phase I

Project Description

The Island is owned by the Texas General Land Office and leased for the purposes of protetion and management of clolnial nesting waterbirds by Audubon Texas. Currently, the northern edge of the island is experiencing erosion, primarily from wave damage produced during heavy cold fronts from fall through winter and spring.  Cut bank erosion at a rate of approximately 10 feet a year is occurring where mature native shrubs have been established, represening some of the best area for habitat resotration potential on the island.  The primary benefit from this project is the protection of the rookery island from wind and wave erosion. This project will include preliminary engineering, alternatives analysis and a 70% construction plan.
