Matagorda Island Marsh Restoration

Project Description

This project will result in the restoration of 2,500 acres of contiguous wetland, and an increase in the abundance and diversity of species that utilize the wetlands.  Restoration will include installing water-exchange structures (such as culverts and low water crossings) and conducting earth-moving activities (such as removing levees and filling man-made ditches that prematurely drain fringe marsh and adjacent uplands). The goal is to restore and/or enhance water-exchange across man-made obstructions. Individual components of water-exchange being considered include inundation from incoming tide, internal circulation, ebb tide, and upland hydrology flow patterns.
