South Padre Island Dune Restoration Volunteer Program

Project Description

South Padre Island will stage and host volunteer planting events planting approximately 180,000 indigenous plants. Native plant species including panicum amarum and uniola paniculata will be planted and potentially, sea oats. Signs will be installed near planting sites to educate visitors of dune vegetation importance as well as provide protection for the dunes, The volunteer planting events for this project will be held in the early fall to late spring season, however, dates are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Depending on planting location, project success varies. In project areas that are of considerable distance from the water, sand fencing may be used in conjunction with plantings. Through this project and continuous dune restoration, the City can maintain a healthy beach and added protection.
