Jack Giberson Records
Jack Giberson (1919-2007), worked for the General Land Office for 41 years. During his career he served as Chief Clerk and First Deputy Land Commissioner. The Jack Giberson Papers include correspondence, memoranda, press releases, legal documents, legislation, administrative documents, maps, surveys, field notes, newspaper clippings, photographs, reports, and notes collected and created by Giberson during his employment at the Land Office.

Ken Towery Papers
Ken Towery (1923- ), Pultizer Prize-winning Texas reporter and former POW, was born in 1923 in Monroe County, Mississippi. His papers contain newspapers, clippings, magazines, and moving images documenting his investigation of the Veterans Land Board Scandal in 1954-1955.

Land Office Commonplace Book
This commonplace book centers on a theme of veterans and land grant information. The book contains sections organized by military unit or battle. There are transcriptions of legislation relating to land, the legislative history of Texas counties and a section listing the fees of the General Land Office. It may have been used by Texas Ranger Captain James E. Lucy to investigate land-title fraud in Texas during the 1870s.

Land Revaluations Records
On two separate occasions the Texas Legislature gave relief to some land owners affected by drought conditions. The Revaluation Acts of 1925 and 1937 had the affect of renegotiating the terms of sale for lands that were worth significantly less then originally sold for because of drought conditions. of the 1930s. The revaluations entries list county, section, acreage, classification, previous sale price, and new valuation price.

Letters of Inquiry Relative to Alleged Vacancies
Letters of Inquiry are correspondence sent by individuals to the Survey Department of the General Land Office to ascertain the presence of unsurveyed public school land also known as a vacancy. The Letters of Inquiry include 7 file cabinet drawers of correspondence and maps, 1919-1930. Each letter contains at least one vacancy inquiry, though many have multiple pages of inquiries. As one of the more esoteric and complicated groups of records, the Letters are only available through appointment in the Research Room. Notice will give staff the time to consult with the Surveying Department to better serve the researcher.

The Land Commissioner is compelled through various acts of the Texas Legislature to advertise land available for sale or lease to individuals. The Volume includes public bulletins announcing state lands available for purchase or lease.

Maddox Family Papers
The Maddox brothers--John. W. Maddox (1846-1935), and his brother Frank M. Maddox (1851-1921)--began working as surveyors in the panhandle in the early 1870s. Through the 1890s an important business focus of the Maddox Brothers was land speculation and real estate development, in addition to their regular work as surveyors.
The Maddox Family Papers consists of maps, correspondence, and typescript materials dating from 1850 to approximately 1941. The bulk of the materials is made up of maps and sketches which were gathered or produced in relation to the surveying and real estate interests of John W. Maddox and his brother Frank M. Maddox. Additional correspondence and other materials are also present which relate to personal and some business matters of the Maddox family.

McMullen & McGloin's Colony Records
John McMullen and James McGloin received a contract from Coahuila y Texas in 1828 under the state colonization laws to settle 200 Irish families in an area located between the Nueces and Medina rivers. The records of McMullen and McGloin's Colony consist of land titles and one plat map relating to the distribution of land in the colony.

Milam's Colony Records
In 1826, Benjamin Rush Milam received an empresario contract to settle 300 families between the Guadalupe and Colorado Rivers north of the San Antonio Road. Talbot Chambers was appointed land commissioner and issued fifty-three land titles to settlers in Milam's Colony in 1835. The records of Milam's Colony includes land titles, testimonios, unfinished titles, blank titles, correspondence, and plat maps.
