Virginia C. McNeal Conkle Scrapbook documents the indictments against former Land Commissioner Bascom Giles and others who participated in the Veteran's Land Board Scandal as covered through the Austin print media. Conkle served on the Travis County grand jury that served the indictments.
Virginia C. McNeal Conkle was born in Watson, Missouri April 19, 1912. She was married to Ellsworth P. Conkle, a playwright and professor emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. She was one of a group of five women who were the first to serve on a Grand Jury in Travis County. She was a member of the Travis County Grand Jury that indicted former Land Commissioner Bascom Giles and others who participated in the Veteran's Land Board Scandal.
Mrs. Conkle died August 3, 1995 at the age of 83.
The Virginia C. McNeal Conkle Scrapbook contains newspaper articles, correspondence, memos and personal remembrances of Conkle. The scrapbook documents the first grand jury in Travis County to include women as well as indictments by that grand jury. Indictments secured by that grant jury included charges against former Land Commissioner Bascom Giles and others who participated in the Veteran's Land Board Scandal.
The scrapbook is probably arranged chronologically. However, there are no dates attached to the articles in the scrapbook.
