Texas General Land Office Awards $6 Million for Projects Across Seven Coastal Counties
TEXAS — Commissioner Buckingham, M.D. is excited to announce that the Texas General Land Office (GLO) has awarded $6 million for projects across seven coastal counties through its Coastal Management Program (CMP) Grant Cycle 28. “As a Texan who grew up near the coast and lived in Galveston for more than a decade —preserving our state’s precious shorelines and their communities is a top priority of mine,” said Commissioner Buckingham.

On Monday, April 10th at 2:00 p.m., the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery will conduct a World War II KIA/MIA Burial for U.S. Army Air Forces Second Lieutenant (2LT) Wayne Lou Dyer.Born on September 28, 1921, 2LT Dyer entered into service during World War II, and was assigned to the 569th Bombardment Squadron, 390th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 13th Bombardment Wing, 3rd Air Division, and 8th Air Force. He was shot down by enemy fighters during a large bombing mission near Leipzig, Germany in May 1944.

Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham M.D. encouraged all friends of Texas beaches to join her and participate in the 2023 Adopt-A-Beach Coastwide Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 22nd. The cleanup will span 25 locations across the Texas coast, from Port Arthur to Boca Chica.“As a community, I hope we can all take pride and ownership of our beautiful Texas coast, and always remember, don’t mess with Texas beaches,” said Commissioner Buckingham in a video to help inspire volunteers to sign up and give back to our coastal communities.

On Friday, March 31st at 11:00 a.m. sharp, the Texas State Veterans Cemetery At Abilene will conduct an Unaccompanied Veteran Burial for U.S. Army Private Earnest McCloud. Born on September 20, 1945, Private McCloud served from July 1967 to May 1969. Private McCloud received the Purple Heart Medal with three Oak Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Private McCloud is not expected to have any next-of-kin attend his burial.

Today, Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. announced that the Texas General Land Office (GLO) is partnering with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Orange County to provide the residents of Orange County with a free event to dispose of inoperable vessels. The Vessel Turn-In Program (VTIP) will take place April 18, 20, 22, 25, 27, and 29 from 10 am to 6 pm. During the multi-day turn-in event, residents may bring their derelict or inoperable boats to the designated drop-off location to be verified by the GLO and TPWD for eligibility.
